26-year-old’s killing in Anantnag leaves a family in shock, and a circus troupe in fear

(PTI) Barely half an hour before he was shot dead by suspected militants in Kashmir’s Anantnag on Monday, 26-year-old Deepak Kumar had made a phone call to his home at Bilaspur village in Jammu’s Udhampur to inform his elder brother that he had sent Rs 3,000 to his family. Kumar had been working with a private circus troupe for nearly seven years. According to residents of Bilaspur village, he got married last year and his wife, Sakshi, is eight months pregnant. On Monday, Kumar and his colleagues were busy dismantling the troupe’s ‘Manoranjan Park’ in Anantnag, getting ready to shift the equipment to Kupwara where they intended to set up camp next. Manipur violence: Shah assures probe, asks Kuki groups to hold peace for 15 days

  Imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur and creation of a separate administration for tribals were among the key demands from tribal leaders who met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Churachandpur district on Tuesday, said sources. Shah is learnt to have assured that the demands would be considered, but asked the leaders to ensure peace for at least a fortnight so that normalcy could return and the talks could be taken forward. Shah also assured an independent probe into the violence by a central agency or judicial committee, said sources. Shah is on a four-day visit to Manipur to review the security situation in the state and bring warring Kukis and Meiteis together to resolve the turmoil that has affected Manipur since May 3. In Churachandpur, which was among the worst hit districts, Shah held closed-door meetings with leaders of the Zo-Kuki civil society organisations, tribe representatives and intellectuals.
